I originally planned to post a product review today, but when I sat down to blog it out, I just couldn’t shake my excitement for the start of my favorite season, summer. I’m such a summer gal. Maybe being a July birthday baby makes me love it, but there is just something about the sun shining longer each day, the taste of fresh fruits and veggies, the smell of a grill, the sounds of crickets and cicadas and the feel of your feet in the sand and water. Despite my love for all things warm and sunny, it’s really important that we take good care of our hair and skin during these hot months. Below I have shared a few of my favorite summer products and items- not all hair-related. Hope you don’t mind 😉
To kick off my list, I have to play the role of “Debbie Downer” for a minute. Let’s talk skin… and more specifically, skin cancer prevention. The dangers are real. To put it in perspective, each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. The sad (and yet enlightening) truth to this is that it is preventable! Protect yourselves, please. There is an abundant selection of products and items that can help with this. Aside from using SPF EVERYDAY, I personally encourage you to avoid tanning beds and to limit your time in the sun. A little shade goes a long way; and keeps you from looking like a leather bag at age 45. I’m just sayin’
I happen to have recently tried a new facial sun prevention product that I really liked, Supergoop! City Sunscreen Serum. This multi-tasking potion is a daily protectant from UVB and UVA rays as well as a repairing agent for past sun damage. It’s the perfect daily product that will protect your pretty face and keep your skin healthy and smooth. The serum is more of a cream than what I would call a serum, but it’s thin and absorbs easily into skin. It has no scent, which personally, I like. It isn’t the cheapest of daily sun protections, but you get much more than your average daily moisturizer with the Supergoop!
Don’t forget to protect your lips! Lately, I have been using Nivea’s lip care for sun protection, which works pretty well for me.
Summer makeup can be a challenge. It’s hot, you’re sweating… in the wrong conditions, it’s not uncommon to watch your lovely face melt away (hypothetically speaking of course). And it certainly isn’t the time of year you want thick layers of foundation clogging your pores. What to do? What to do? Last weekend, on a girl’s getaway to the SC coast (um, can I go back?), my dear friend and makeup guru, Lauren let me try her Urban Decay bb cream. To be honest, I never got the hype of “the beauty balm”. I purchased Stila bb cream last year on a whim and after spending a good bit of money, I was totally underwhelmed with my purchase. It still sits in my drawer, wasting space. Nonetheless, as we were getting ready for our day of lounging poolside last week, I wanted something to put on my face to even out my skin tone at the very least. Lauren suggested I try her bb cream. I’m a huge fan of Urban Decay makeup in general, so I shouldn’t be surprised, but this stuff was fantastic. It was the perfect light, day-time coverage, but with the benefits of the bb cream’s other offerings (more SPF being one of them). It comes in three shades, “naked light”, “naked medium” and “naked dark”. Upon my return home, I quickly placed an online order so that I could have my own bottle stat.
Changing gears a bit, if I haven’t shouted it from the rooftops before, let this be heard “I LOVE DRY SHAMPOO!” Seriously, love may not be a strong enough adjective. I cannot live without the stuff. I have kept my adoration for DS under wraps because I am planning to review a few different types of the stuff and didn’t want to steal the thunder of a good review, however, I can’t not include a good DS on my summer list. I have a handful of favorites, all for different reasons, but make no mistake, this miracle worker gets a lot of love for keeping the oil out of my hair during the hot months. Stay tuned for more info on which brands are recommended, but for now, here’s a sneak preview of one that gets my approval…
Okay, so this isn’t a beauty product, but man oh man do I love it. Some may even call me an addict. Starbucks Iced Passion tea (unsweet…light on ice, please) is my must-have refreshing, summer beverage. I don’t let myself have one everyday, but I do find myself drawn to Starbucks a few times each week, at minimum. It’s the perfect refresher… not too sweet, but full of delicious flavor! Try one. They also blend with lemonade if you’re into mixology 🙂 And whether you try this or not, keep drinking your water. It does a body much more good than milk (and I just aged myself by referencing that slogan from the 80’s).
Jumping back to our skincare needs, summer is also the season of smooth, touchable skin. Shaving can be annoying and especially so when the skin becomes irritated. I recently purchased a bottle of EOS Shave Cream. I have been a user of their lip balm and decided to give their shave cream a whirl. I really like it. It’s very creamy and leaves your skin feeling moisturized, unlike a lot of other shave creams and gels. My hair follicles seem to approve as well… no sign of irritation at all.
Lastly, I don’t have a specific product to endorse, but a reminder that a cute hat and shades complete any ensemble AND protect your eyes and scalp from unwanted UVB/UVA rays and sun damage. Mr. GHD and I went to a baseball game last night. Even though it was the evening, the Carolinas were a lovely touch above 90 degrees. WHEW! Sitting in the stands along the first base line, the hot sun didn’t bother me a bit. My hat and sunnies kept me comfortable.
Let me be the first to wish you an official happy start to summer! Stay safe, stay hydrated, wear your SPF and have fun! Happy Memorial Day everyone. And a special, heartfelt thank you to all of our country’s past and present service members who we honor this weekend.
